FAQs
- We will consider applications from students who narrowly miss out on achieving the required grades, on a case by case basis. We recommend that you contact a potential supervisor to discuss your research ideas prior to applying, to increase your chances of success. Work experience within your chosen field may be taken into consideration as part of a full overall assessment of your application to establish your suitability for a place on your chosen course.
- A range of fully funded and competitive studentships are available, often tied to specific research projects or open calls. These may cover tuition fees and provide a stipend. Applicants should check the university’s studentship listings and discuss funding options with potential supervisors.
- For the 2025 entry, tuition fees are £5,006 per year for UK students and £24,500 per year for overseas students.
- Research themes include brain and behaviour, cognition, development and learning, environment, food and consumer behaviour, health psychology, and social psychology. Students can work on interdisciplinary projects and benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, including EEG, tDCS, TMS labs, and more.
- The full-time PhD typically takes 4 years to complete. In the first year, students undertake compulsory training in quantitative and qualitative research methods, academic skills, and teaching. Throughout the programme, students develop research skills, conduct their own studies, and ultimately submit a thesis for a viva examination.
- Applicants are expected to hold at least an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) in psychology or a related discipline, and a master’s degree in a relevant subject with a pass of 65% or above. International applicants must meet the English language requirements of the programme.
- Applications are open throughout the year and we advise that you apply as early as you are able to, and ideally no later than two months prior to your intended start date. Start dates are in October, January, April or July, although not all courses offer all four entry points. Please check the postgraduate research degree course pages for details.
