One of the factors when deciding to undertake an MSc at Bayes Business School will be the cost of living in London. You will need to budget for general living expenses, including rent, bills, food, toiletries, travel and socialising.
Average living costs can be difficult to predict, as every student will have different priorities and lifestyle choices. That is why, in addition to the information on this page, you should fully consider and research your personal likely living costs.
Accommodation can be one of the biggest expenses and costs vary depending on which option you choose, so please consider if your preferred option suits your budget. Please check the information on our accommodation and housing pages for information on student halls and private accommodation run by the University of London Housing Services.
Please note the list provided below is approximate and not exhaustive, therefore it should be used as a guide only.
Accommodation (in halls) - £950-£1,400 per month
City, University of London work with affiliated halls of residence for post-graduate students. If you have a place in halls of residence, you can expect your accommodation to be between approximately £220 and £320 per week depending on which hall you are allocated to. This weekly amount typically includes utilities such as heating, lighting and hot water. You can see the post-graduate halls of residence and their related costs here.
Accommodation (private) - £600-£1,600 per month
Prices will vary depending on which zone in London you live in and whether you want to flat share or live alone. You could expect to pay more than this if you want to live within walking distance of the campus. However, the majority of students will live further out and commute in for classes. Private accommodation rent is not guaranteed to include utilities. You can find further advice on the City website here and you can use sites such as Zoopla, Rightmove and SpareRoom to find accommodation in London. We would recommend looking at the government’s website about your rights when renting in the UK as these may be different from what you are used to.
Electricity/Gas/Water/Council tax/Internet - £120-£220 per month
Utilities in private accommodation are rarely included within the rental price. Prices will vary depending on whether you flat share or live alone. You are able to change internet providers if you find a better contract, however, electricity, gas and water providers are sometimes fixed by the landlord or letting agent. Council Tax will vary in amounts depending on the borough of London you live in but you might get a discount if you are a full-time student.
Travel - £65-£130 per month
London has a great travel network with trains, tubes, buses and bikes connecting you across the city. Each comes with a different price so depending on which public transport you take, this can affect your travel budget. Full-time students are eligible for a 30% discount on a student weekly or monthly travel card to use on buses and the underground.
Food - £170-£350 per month
While London is home to some of the best food in the world, eating out every day can become costly. Near the campus you can find chain coffee shops and supermarkets that have reasonably priced lunches. However, we recommend buying groceries and bringing lunches if you are looking to budget your money.
Entertainment - £110-£220 per month
One of the benefits of studying is access to student discounts. Cinemas, museums and theatres often advertise a student price which you are entitled to. High-street retails often have student sales and many food vendors will provide various discounts. To take opportunity of any of these, we would recommend getting a TOTUM card from the Students' Union.
Scholarships
We have a range of scholarships for Master's degrees at Bayes Business School. Most scholarship applications for 2024/25 years of entry will open in January 2024.
Every year we are able to award a number of scholarships to offer-holders on our Specialist Master's degree programme generously provided by different benefactors.
Scholarships that have been confirmed for 2024 intake are listed below and, where applicable, will be updated as and when details are finalised. Applications for most scholarships for 2024 intake are now open. Offer-holders can apply through the application form links within the respective scholarship sections on this page. The deadline to apply for most master's scholarships is May 2024 - please check the individual scholarships for the exact date. Unless otherwise stated, in order to be considered for a scholarship, applicants must have accepted their offer on their MSc degree and paid the deposit.
Decisions are normally made by the awarding body during the summer, and most results will be announced between June and August. We understand the importance of confirming the results of the scholarships as soon as possible. All scholarship applicants will be informed of the decisions by email as and when they are made. Please note that we are not able to provide updates on the status of individual applications.
FAQs
If you have been offered a place on an MSc programme, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure your place. This deposit must be paid before the deadline stated in your offer. Your offer acceptance will only be finalised once the deposit payment has been received. Deposits will only be returned in exceptional cases to applicants who have failed to meet the conditions of their offer and cannot be accepted onto the programme, or to international students who were unable to obtain the necessary visas. This will be subject to presentation and assessment of valid documentation supporting the claim. Please see City, University of London's deposit policy for more information. The deposit for all full-time MSc programmes is £2,000. The deposit for all part-time programmes is £1,000. The deposit amount will be deducted from the first instalment of your tuition fees. Please pay your deposit through the City, University of London online payment system, accessible via the Response Form link in your offer.
Transcript or interim transcript* Grading system used by your college or university* Final year module list (if currently studying)* Personal statement* CV* Confirmation of professional qualifications/exemptions/passes (if applicable) English language test result (if applicable) GMAT (if applicable) References A-Level certificates (if requested) Please note that we require at least the documents marked with * to make a decision on your application.
Once your application is received, it is reviewed by an Admissions Panel, who consider applications on a case-by-case basis, and take a holistic approach, considering academic background, work experience, and any other relevant credentials included with an application, before making a formal decision. We aim to return a decision as soon as possible, normally no more than six weeks from receiving a complete application. Please note that we cannot comment on individual eligibility before you apply, and we can only process your application once it is fully complete, with all requested information received.
We have no set deadlines. We operate on a rolling admissions basis and close the courses when they are full. Some courses close as early as the beginning of May, so early application is recommended. Imminent course closures will be notified on the website. Because of the length of time required to apply for a Student visa, we are unable to accept applications from overseas students requiring a Student visa after mid-July. If you apply after this date, or you do not submit all your supporting documents in time, your application may be deferred until the next academic year. We cannot guarantee a decision can be made in time to secure your Student visa. If you wish to discuss your individual circumstances, please contact your Admissions Officer. For a successful application to receive an unconditional status, all award documents must be verified via one of the methods listed in your offer letter.
When you fill in the application form, you will see that you are asked to provide the email addresses of two referees. Normally we do not need to see the references at the initial review stage. Therefore, we will contact your referees if you are made an offer. When you are submitting your application it would be courteous of you to inform your referees in advance that we might be contacting them. Referees are invited to email their reference directly to the Admissions Office from an academic or professional email account. We cannot accept references emailed from web-based email accounts like @gmail.com, @hotmail.com or @126.com because we cannot confirm the provenance of these. Please bear this in mind when you fill in their email address on the application form. Confidentiality We can only accept confidential references. This means that your referee has written their letter objectively and that you have not read it. Therefore, we cannot accept references that you email to us yourself, or that you upload with your application. We also cannot accept references from agents. The reference should always come directly from the referee.
Due to the huge volume of applications we process, for most programmes, your application will be considered without references. This means that if you were to be made an offer, providing satisfactory references would be listed as a condition. We hope this clears up a few common queries but if you have any questions about providing your references you can check the guidance on the website or contact your Admissions Officer who will be glad to advise you.
