All MSEM students will participate in a sixteen-credit, cohort-based management track, in which the entering class will take three required, full-semester management courses in the fall as a cohort:

  • Strategies in Accounting and Finance (3 credits)
  • Strategies for Innovation and Growth (3 credits)
  • Professional Presentations (3 credits)

The residential MSEM program is typically a 3-semester program. Students in the program are required to complete:

  • A declared technical track of five advanced courses (minimum fifteen credits) in engineering or applied science (please see a list of available options here). Up to two Engineering for Professionals courses may be applied to a student’s technical track at the adviser’s discretion.
  • A project-based management track offered by the Center for Leadership Education and tailored to the needs of future engineering managers. To facilitate this program, all MSEM students will take required management courses together as a cohort. All management cohorts begin during the fall semester.

In addition to the cohort-based classes, all students are required to take the Intersession course the Practice of Consulting (1.5 credits), which offers students the option to travel internationally if desired.

The remaining required management courses (5.5 credits) are half-semester courses, offered in the spring & fall:

  • Managing People/Resolving Conflict (1.5 credits)
  • Leading Change (1.5 credits)
  • MSEM Seminar (1 credit)
  • 1 additional elective (1.5 credits)

Since MSEM is a professional degree, most master’s students will be expected to cover their own tuition and expenses, though some merit aid may be available at the discretion of the admissions committee.

More information on the typical costs of a JHU graduate student can be found here, along with instructions on how to apply for additional financial aid in the form of loans.

MSEM applicants who completed their undergraduate degrees at Johns Hopkins will receive a WSE Dean’s Fellowship waiving 50% of tuition.
