In order to receive university scholarship funds, international students must obtain either a Social Security number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Stanford's Bechtel International Center offers information on their website about obtaining an SSN or an ITIN. The SSN or ITIN is not required as part of the financial aid application process.

  • GRE scores are not required from MS applicants.

  • TOEFL is required from all applicants whose first language is not English regardless of citizenship. Tests must be taken prior to the program’s application deadline and application submission. Self-reported scores should be recorded on the application. They not accept IELTS scores.

  • Register your recommenders in the online application as early as possible to ensure their letters are received by the application deadline. After you enter your recommender’s information, the application system sends a personalized link to that individual to submit the recommendation online. After your recommender submits the recommendation letter, you will receive an email notification. You may manage your recommenders on the same Recommendations page where you registered them. This includes sending reminder emails and changing recommenders. You continue to have access to this page after you submit your application.

  • You may request a waiver in the online application if you (will) have a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a recognized institution in a country other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom in which English was the language of instruction. You will be asked to provide the following: Upload an official statement certifying that your program was taught exclusively in English You may also link to your institution’s official website stating the language of instruction Your waiver request will be routed to Graduate Admissions after you submit your application and pay the application fee. Allow up to 15 business days after submitting your application for a response. This will not delay the receipt of your application by your graduate program
