Both Business Analytics and Data Science students learn similar tools and concepts, develop skills in machine learning and statistics, and work with structured and unstructured data. The key difference lies in the application domain. Business Analytics students apply these skills to solve real-world business problems, starting from a business need and using data science principles like statistics, machine learning, and optimization to guide company actions. Our graduates are “Business Data Scientists”. In contrast, a Data Science Master's program emphasizes the mathematical and theoretical underpinnings of these methods, focusing on the modeling mechanics and potential applications across a wide range of domains. If you are interested in applying AI and data science to solve business problems, the Rady Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program is the right choice for you.
To be considered for financial assistance or non-subsidized loans, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To receive priority funding, file your FAFSA as early as Jan. 1, but no later than March 2. Complete and submit your FAFSA. UC San Diego’s school code is 001317. Once your FAFSA data has been processed and transferred to the UC San Diego's Financial Aid Office by the FAFSA central processor, you will be notified of your eligibility by the Financial Aid Office. UC San Diego's Financial Aid Office provides step-by-step application directions, downloadable forms, answers to frequently asked questions and more. U.S. citizens or permanent residents should apply for Federal Stafford Loans first because of favorable interest rates and origination fees. These are variable, low-interest educational loans. The Federal Stafford Loan Program provides unsubsidized loans where you pay accruing interest while in school, grace and authorized deferment periods. These loans are need-based. They do not require a co-signer and are not based on your credit history. Deferment options are available. The FAFSA is required to determine what loans may be available. Private educational loans are available to domestic and international applicants. For international applicants, some lending institutions may require that a U.S. citizen co-sign. Refer to the UC Preferred Lender List for details.
If you receive scholarships, keep in mind that the scholarship money has to be accounted for in your annual estimated Cost of Attendance. Your other financial awards may be replaced with scholarship money, first reducing any unmet need in your financial aid package, then your other awards in the following order going against your financial need: university loan, work-study, parent PLUS loan, student loans, grants. Generally any scholarship money that replaces a loan reduces your future loan debt.
The Rady School admissions team reviews applications as they are received and makes decisions on a rolling basis. The number of seats is limited so applying early increases your likelihood of gaining admission. After you submit your application, you will receive confirmation and instructions for further action, if necessary. Once you have submitted a complete application, it will be reviewed to determine if the admissions committee would like to schedule an interview. Interviews are required for admission and are by invitation only. Interviews are completed via an online and asynchronous interviewing platform. The Rady Admissions Office reserves the right to request to live interviews in certain cases. If you have questions about the application process, please contact the Rady Admissions Office.
