The Electrical and Computer Engineering department offers graduate programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in thirteen disciplines within electrical and computer engineering. More than 60 faculty members in ECE perform cutting-edge research in areas including Signal and Image Processing, Machine Learning and Data Science, and Intelligent Systems, Robotics, and Control, just to name a few.

The Ph.D. program requires students to work on a research project under the guidance of a faculty member. Ph.D. students must complete coursework, pass the Ph.D. Preliminary and University Qualifying Examinations, and submit and defend a doctoral thesis. The M.S. program is intended to provide the intensive technical preparation necessary for advanced technical work in the engineering profession or subsequent pursuit of a Ph.D. For the M.S. degree, students can choose to do coursework and pass the Comprehensive Examination, or they can pursue the thesis option that requires coursework and the completion of a research project.

Meeting the cost of an education is a significant investment. At UC San Diego, we are committed to providing a comprehensive need-based financial aid program that makes it financially possible for admitted students to attend. Our admission program is need-blind, meaning, for all but some international applicants, financial status will not affect the admission decision.

The annual estimated cost of attendance includes allowances for:

  • Tuition and Fees
  • Living Expenses (i.e. Food and Housing)
  • Books, course materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Miscellaneous Personal Expenses
  • Transportation Expenses
