FAQs
Yes, you will need to provide one academic or professional reference in support of your application. If you have studied full-time or part-time in higher education within the last two years, we require an academic reference from an individual who has directly taught you (or who has supervised your academic research) in your final year of study. If you have not been in higher education within the last 2 years, you may instead nominate a person with knowledge of your current or most recent employment activity to act as your referee. Such a referee must have acted as your supervisor or line manager (or similar role) and must explain in the reference how he/she knows you. If you have been self-employed, so do not have someone in a managerial position who can provide a reference, then please contact usLink opens in a new window and we will advise you further. Please include an email address for your referee on the application form. We will contact them directly and ask them to provide a reference using a secure web link. We will only contact your referee once and we will not chase referees for you. As a matter of courtesy, we strongly advise you to contact your referee in advance of submitting your application to make sure they are happy to provide a reference in this way.
Here are the themes that you should consider when writing your personal statement. This list is not comprehensive, but can form the basis of your statement. Academic Why you want to undertake postgraduate study. Your reasons for choosing the specific course. This is vital. Saying you are 'interested' in the subject area is not sufficient - you need to demonstrate a solid rationale. Show to us that you understand the subject and purpose of the course and how it's going to help you towards achieving your longer term goals. Show us how your first degree and/or work experience is relevant to the course, or, if you're changing direction please tell us why and explain your decisions. Discuss the academic skills you have developed and how they relate to the MSc course you have chosen. Personal Attributes What personal skills can you offer? Again, you must explain how these skills are relevant for your study at WMG What is your motivation for studying this course and how does it fit with your future career goals.
We recommend submitting your application as early in the application cycle as possible as courses will close once full. Applications open mid-October each year and are reviewed on a rolling basis from October to July. Please bear in mind that we will close courses when they reach capacity which may be well before the July deadline. If you have not yet graduated, you may apply during your final year of undergraduate studies. In this case, if your application is successful, we will make a conditional offer and you can provide final transcripts once you have completed your studies.
