Scholarships

Scholarships from the Department of Statistics at Western Michigan University acknowledge current outstanding statistics and data science students and augment awards made by WMU or the Lee Honors College.  More specifically, to be considered for a scholarship, a student must be an undergraduate statistics or data science major or a graduate student enrolled in any of the accelerated, masters, or doctoral level statistics or data science programs.  Students who receive a scholarship are expected to remain in their statistics or data science majors/programs throughout the duration of the award.  Students who change their majors/programs to something other than what is stated above will have their scholarships rescinded.



International students with a graduate assistantship should contact their department to inquire about special funding to cover the International Student Fee. Academic colleges, not the Haenicke Institute for Global Education, disburses applicable funds to international students who hold a graduate assistantship.


The following is a list of graduate scholarships, which are typically awarded for fall and/or spring semesters of the subsequent academic year pending available funding. To be considered for a scholarship you have to fill out the graduate scholarship application form by February 15.



Arthur E. and Martha S. Hearron Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding full-time students with junior, senior, or graduate status who are majoring in statistics. Funds for this scholarship were generously donated to the department by Arthur and Martha Hearron in 2003.

Dr. Gerald L. Sievers Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to outstanding statistics graduate students. The scholarship is in honor of Dr. Gerald L. Sievers, professor emeritus of statistics at Western Michigan University and co-founder of WMU’s statistics program.

Statistics Scholarship

This award, established in 2002, is awarded to outstanding graduate students.

Statistics – Data Science Scholarship

This award, established in 2018, is awarded to outstanding graduate students.

FAQs

  • Fall semester usually starts around Sept. 1. The second semester is called spring term, and starts the first week of January. There are two half-length semesters in the summer: summer I starts in early May and summer II starts in late June.

  • Applications for master's in statistics do not need the GRE. The GRE general test is required for doctoral applications. Subject tests are not necessary.

  • To log into your WMU email account, go to wmich.edu/wexchange and log in using your [email protected] (NOT your email address). Before you log in to WMU email account for the first time, you will be required to change your temporary password according to the instructions on your ACCESS GOLD letter. You will not be able to log in using the temporary password.

  • Applicants usually enter the Ph.D. in statistics with a master's in statistics. If you do not have a master's degree, we recommend you apply for the M.S. in statistics and change to the Ph.D. program after one year of coursework.

  • You will need to arrange for housing during your studies at Western Michigan University. Housing options are available on WMU's main campus as well as off-campus through private apartment communities.
