The scholarships are designed to assist and encourage postgraduate students in science, statistics, engineering, law, or other disciplines related to the fishing industry. New Zealand's fisheries exist in a complex legislative and political environment and are hugely varied in the way they operate. As such, opportunities exist for research into innovative responses to the various challenges and opportunities that face the seafood sector. Research may relate to anything from environmentally-friendly fishing practices, biology, and assessment of fish stocks, and greater processing efficiencies, to the revision of applicable legal and policy frameworks.
