PhD in Medical Biotechnology

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology one or more PhD stipends are vacant, within the doctoral programme Clinical Science, Laboratory and Translational Medicine. The stipends are open for appointment from 15 January 2026 or soon hereafter. The PhD scholarship includes an obligation for a 9 month research stay at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China integrated with international collaborations within China and South Africa at world-leading research laboratories. We are excited to offer a fully-funded PhD scholarship opportunity for a motivated and ambitious researcher to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will explore the intricate landscape of autoimmune reactions, dissecting their roles in both autoimmune diseases and cancers. Investigation of the immunological role of extracellular vesicles and systems biology role of autoantibodies are of key interest but the PhD candidate have wide options to design their study.
