- Students are trained in analytical, organic, physical, inorganic, environmental, or geological chemistry. Many join transdisciplinary research teams focusing on areas like energy and sustainability, chemical measurement, molecular science, geologic and biospheric science, materials and nanoscience, medicine and health, and structure-function dynamics.
- The PhD is a full-time program typically completed in 5 years (60 months). It includes coursework (six graduate-level courses, 12–18 credit hours), seminars, qualifying exams (written and oral), a dissertation prospectus, and a public dissertation defense.

- Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor’s degree program. International applicants must also provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL iBT 80+, IELTS 6.5+, Duolingo 105+).
