- Students have access to Boston University Libraries, the Editorial Institute, interdisciplinary seminars, research workshops, the American & New England Studies Program, and opportunities to participate in conferences, symposia, and collaborative research groups.
- All admitted PhD students are fully funded for 5 years. Funding includes full tuition remission, an annual stipend, health insurance, and additional support for research and conference travel. Funding comes through fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships.
- Applicants should hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related field; many successful applicants also hold a Master’s degree. Required application materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), three recommendation letters, and official transcripts. GRE scores are not required.
- Research areas include British literature from medieval through modern periods, American literature across all centuries, African American and African diasporic literature, world Anglophone literatures, modernism, Romanticism, Victorian studies, Renaissance and Shakespeare studies, poetry and poetics, narrative theory, critical theory, environmental humanities, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial studies, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary approaches to literature, culture, and history.
- The PhD usually takes 5–6 years of full-time study to complete.
