- The programme starts in the Fall semester. Applications are typically due in December for entry the following academic year.
- All admitted PhD students receive full financial support for 6 years, which includes tuition remission, a competitive annual stipend, health insurance, and summer research funding. Support is provided through fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
- Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related field; many also hold a Master’s degree. Required materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
- Areas of strength include medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare studies, eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American and African diasporic literature, postcolonial and transnational literatures, modernism, contemporary literature, literary and cultural theory, feminist theory, queer studies, ecocriticism, performance and media studies, visual culture, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary studies across philosophy, history, religion, and political theory.
