- Prepare required documents: academic transcripts, degree certificates, research proposal, curriculum vitae, proof of English proficiency, and references. Submit the application through GSD’s online admissions portal. Rolling admissions allow flexible start dates throughout the year. There is a CHF 500 application fee and a CHF 1,500 enrolment fee (non-refundable). Applications are reviewed within approximately three weeks after submission.
- Academic requirements: A bachelor’s and a master’s degree in a relevant discipline (such as international relations, politics, law, economics, or diplomacy). Equivalent overseas qualifications are accepted. Candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds may be required to take a pre-DIR qualifying course. Research proposal: A solid proposal of about 5,000 words, following GSD’s guidelines. English language: Minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent (e.g., TOEFL accepted).
- The Doctor of International Relations (DIR) at GSD is available in two formats: By Research and By Dossier. DIR by Research: Requires a dissertation of 80,000–100,000 words and typically takes 3 years (full-time), resulting in 240 ECTS credits. It can be pursued on campus or via distance learning with mandatory on-site visits. DIR by Dossier: Awarded for distinguished scholarly work of high impact and originality, usually to established authorities in the field. The program is conducted in English and may be pursued full- or part-time (part-time: up to 6 years).
