FAQs
- Funding is available through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) via the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership, Goldsmiths scholarships, Graduate School studentships, and external funding bodies.
- Students are initially registered for MPhil and must undergo a formal upgrade process to transfer to PhD status. The PhD is assessed through submission of a thesis (up to 80,000–100,000 words) and a viva voce oral examination.
- Students benefit from access to the Goldsmiths Library, the University of London’s Senate House Library, departmental research seminars and reading groups, research training through the Graduate School, specialist language and linguistics laboratories, and opportunities to present at conferences and workshops.
- Applicants are usually expected to hold a Master’s degree in English, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, or a related field. Strong academic performance and a clear, viable research proposal are essential. In some cases, applicants with exceptional undergraduate achievement may be admitted to an MPhil leading to PhD.
- Supervision is available in diverse areas including English literature across all periods, comparative literature, translation studies, world literatures, postcolonial studies, critical theory, creative-critical writing, gender and sexuality studies, cultural studies, linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, phonetics, syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics, language and identity, multilingualism, and applied linguistics.
- The PhD usually takes 3–4 years full-time or 5–7 years part-time. The MPhil typically takes 1–2 years full-time or 2–4 years part-time.
