FAQs

  • Students undergo annual progress reviews to assess research milestones, presentation of results, and overall development. They must successfully complete a confirmation of candidature within the first 12 months to continue in the program.
  • Each student is assigned a principal supervisor and at least one co-supervisor who are experienced researchers in public health or tropical medicine. Supervisors provide guidance on research design, data collection, analysis, publication, and thesis development.
  • The application must include a research proposal (1,500–2,000 words), academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, proof of English language proficiency (if applicable), evidence of prior research experience (such as a thesis or publication), and the names of two referees.
  • Key research areas include infectious and vector-borne diseases, epidemiology, tropical medicine, environmental and planetary health, health systems management, Indigenous and community health, health promotion, global health policy, and climate change impacts on health.
  • The PhD is a three to four-year full-time research degree (or part-time equivalent). It involves independent research under supervision leading to the submission of a thesis that makes a significant contribution to public health or tropical medicine knowledge. Students may also complete training modules in research ethics, methodology, and data analysis during the early stages of candidature.
  • The program focuses on advanced research in public health, tropical medicine, and health systems in tropical, rural, and remote settings. It trains students to conduct original research addressing critical health challenges such as infectious diseases, environmental health, Indigenous health, health equity, and health policy in tropical regions.
