- All admitted PhD students receive full funding for 6 years, which includes tuition coverage, an annual stipend, health insurance, and research/travel support. Funding comes from fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research appointments.
- Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related field; many applicants also have a Master’s degree. Required materials include a statement of purpose, a substantial writing sample (15–25 pages), academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
- Areas of research include medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial through contemporary, African American and African diasporic literature, modernism, postcolonial and transnational literatures, comparative literature, literary and cultural theory, philosophy and literature, aesthetics, gender and sexuality studies, and interdisciplinary work across the humanities and social sciences.
- The PhD is designed to be completed in 6 years of full-time study.
