The research unit Roman Law and Legal History is a dynamic and internationally oriented department that provides broad education and conducts research in various subfields of legal history, including Roman law. Chronologically, the research focus lies on the period after 1500. The members of the unit are responsible for teaching the basic subjects History of Public Law and Roman Law (first phase of the Bachelor's degree) and History of Private Law (second phase of the undergraduate). At master's level, the reflective courses Legal History and History of International Law, as well as European Legal History are offered. The members of the unit are responsible for seminars on legal history in the bachelor's program and also teach canon law. The research has three main focuses: the intellectual development of the continental legal tradition with emphasis on learned Roman and canon law, the historical development of international law, including in the context of colonisation and imperialism, and the historical development of economic law and financial law./nLocation: Leuven, Belgium./nPosition: PhD scholarship holder (100%), initial appointment 1 year, extendable to maximum 4 years.
