FAQs

  • You will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community, engaging with students and staff across Sociology, Gender Studies, Science Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, and Applied Social Science. There are regular seminars, workshops, and informal gatherings
  • The main entry point is in October, but applications are accepted at any time. Early application is recommended, especially if you are seeking funding or require on-campus accommodation
  • You will have two supervisors, usually matched to your research interests. The program includes skills and dissertation workshops throughout the year. You are encouraged (but not required) to attend relevant MA taught modules. The PhD culminates in a research thesis and viva examination.
  • An IELTS (Academic) score of at least 7.0 overall is normally required, with no component below 6.0. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted depending on your background and previous studies
  • Applicants should have an upper second class honours degree (UK 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant social science background and a good master’s degree in a relevant subject. Non-standard applicants may be considered on a case-by-case basis. A viable research proposal is required as part of the application
