FAQs
- You must complete an ‘agreement form external PhD candidates’ with your supervisor, provide proof of funding, and submit all required documents (including supervisor’s confirmation) via the PhD Applicant Login. The formal admission decision is made by the Dean.
- While evidence of English proficiency can be uploaded, it is not mandatory for all applicants. Your supervisor will assess your language competency as part of the application process.
- You can either apply for advertised PhD vacancies or directly contact a potential supervisor with a research proposal. The supervisor must be willing to support your project and formally agree to supervise you.
- There are four main types: Employed PhD candidate (paid, full-time, with teaching duties) Contract/scholarship PhD candidate (funded by an external scholarship) PhD candidate with external financing (funded by employer or other sources) External PhD candidate (self-funded).
- Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) relevant to the field. If your degree is from outside the Netherlands, the Dean may need to approve its equivalence. You also need to secure a supervisor (promotor) who is a full professor or senior lecturer at Leiden University.
