FAQs

  • Tuition fees for 2025/26 are set by fee status (Home or Overseas) and are likely to rise annually. Funding options include LSE PhD Studentships, ESRC funding, and other scholarships for both home and overseas students. External funding opportunities may also be available.
  • Progression from MRes to PhD requires approval of the research proposal and satisfactory coursework marks. Annual progress reviews, including a mandatory third-year review after fieldwork. Final award is based on completion of an original research thesis and a viva oral examination.
  • Year 1 (MRes): Qualitative and Quantitative Methods for Anthropologists Evidence and Arguments in Anthropology and Other Social Sciences Supervised Reading Course and Fieldwork Preparation Research Proposal (10,000 words) Seminar on Anthropological Research Years 2–3: Fieldwork (approx. 18 months) Ongoing contact with supervisors Years 4–5: Advanced Professional Development in Anthropology Thesis Writing Seminar Seminar on Anthropological Research.

  • The program typically takes five years (full-time). Year 1: MRes year focused on research methods training and development of a detailed research proposal. Years 2–3: Fieldwork phase, usually lasting around 18 months. Years 4–5: Dissertation writing and participation in seminars on thesis-writing, professional development, and current research. Students are assigned two supervisors and receive ongoing support throughout their studies.
  • The MRes/PhD in Anthropology at LSE is designed to train students in advanced research methods and critical engagement with social theory, preparing them to conduct innovative, long-term ethnographic research. The program is internationally recognized for its rigorous approach and its faculty’s expertise across all major areas of modern social anthropology, with research spanning diverse global settings and topics such as politics, economics, religion, kinship, and more
