FAQs
- Students benefit from access to the Sheppard Library, dedicated research training provided by the Doctoral Institute, departmental research seminars, interdisciplinary networks, and opportunities to present research at conferences and workshops.
- Students are normally registered initially for MPhil status and must undergo a formal upgrade review to transfer to PhD candidature. The PhD is assessed on the basis of a thesis (normally 80,000–100,000 words) and a viva voce examination.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in English Literature, Creative Writing, or a closely related subject. A strong research proposal and academic record are required. In exceptional cases, applicants with first-class undergraduate degrees and relevant experience may be admitted to MPhil with progression to PhD.
- Supervision is offered in a range of fields including contemporary literature, postcolonial and world literatures, gender and sexuality studies, life writing and autobiography, creative writing, drama and performance, cultural theory, literary modernism, eco-criticism, medical humanities, and intersections of literature with philosophy, politics, and the visual arts.
- The PhD usually takes 3–4 years full-time or 5–7 years part-time. The MPhil typically takes 1–2 years full-time or 2–4 years part-time.
