  • Students complete coursework and language requirements in the first years, followed by comprehensive exams, preparation of a dissertation proposal, and the writing and defense of the doctoral dissertation.
  • Students have access to NYU’s Bobst Library and Special Collections, the English Department’s research seminars, interdisciplinary centres such as the Center for the Humanities and the Institute of African American Affairs, digital humanities initiatives, and opportunities to present research at departmental and international conferences.
  • All admitted PhD students receive full funding for at least 5 years. This includes tuition remission, a competitive annual stipend, health insurance, and additional research or conference travel support. Funding is provided through fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
  • Applicants must have a strong undergraduate degree in English or a closely related field. Application materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts. A Master’s degree is not required for entry. GRE scores are not required.
  • Research areas include medieval and Renaissance literature, Shakespeare studies, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian literature, American literature from colonial through contemporary periods, African American and African diasporic literature, postcolonial and global Anglophone literatures, modernism, contemporary poetry and prose, critical theory, gender and sexuality studies, film and media studies, digital humanities, performance studies, and interdisciplinary approaches across history, philosophy, and the arts.
  • The PhD normally takes 6–7 years of full-time study to complete.
