- Students have access to the University Library and Special Collections, the Philip Robinson Library, the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts, research seminars, interdisciplinary training from the Humanities Research Institute, and support through the Doctoral College.
- Funding is available through the Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC), Newcastle University studentships, School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics scholarships, and external sources.
- The main intake is in September, though alternative start dates in January or April may be possible. Application deadlines vary, especially for funded places, with many scholarship competitions closing between January and March for entry the following academic year.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in English Literature or a closely related discipline. Strong academic achievement and a clear research proposal are required. Exceptional candidates with a first-class undergraduate degree may also be considered.
- Supervision is offered across a wide range of areas including medieval literature, early modern and Renaissance studies, eighteenth-century and Romantic literature, Victorian and modernist writing, twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature, postcolonial and world literatures, American literature, children’s literature, poetry, creative writing, book history, and critical theory.
