  • Students benefit from access to Northwestern’s extensive library system, including special collections, interdisciplinary humanities centres such as the Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, departmental colloquia and research groups, professional development workshops, and opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
  • All admitted PhD students receive full financial support for up to 6 years, including tuition coverage, a competitive stipend, health insurance, and research or travel funding. Support is provided through fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research appointments.
  • Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related field; many successful applicants also have a Master’s degree. Application requirements include a statement of purpose, a substantial writing sample (15–25 pages), academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
  • Research areas include medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, eighteenth-century British literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American and African diasporic literature, postcolonial and global literatures, modernism, contemporary fiction and poetry, literary and critical theory, performance and media studies, digital humanities, book history, gender and sexuality studies, and interdisciplinary work across history, philosophy, cultural studies, and political theory.
  • The PhD is normally completed in 6–7 years of full-time study.
