- Students benefit from access to NTNU’s university libraries, digital archives, specialized media and film labs, research groups in media and communication, interdisciplinary seminars, the Doctoral Research School in Humanities and the Arts, and opportunities for international collaboration.
- PhD candidates are employed as salaried research fellows at NTNU. They receive a full salary, social security benefits, and access to research funds. Additional funding may be available for conference travel, fieldwork, or international research stays.
- Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree (normally in media studies, communication, film studies, cultural studies, or related humanities/social sciences disciplines) with strong academic results (equivalent to a B or better on the NTNU grading scale). Applicants must also submit a detailed research proposal aligned with the department’s expertise.
- Research areas include media history, media aesthetics, film and television studies, digital culture, journalism studies, media and communication theory, sound and music in media, visual culture, social media, political communication, gaming and interactive media, and interdisciplinary media and cultural studies.
- The PhD normally takes 3 years of full-time study. If combined with mandatory teaching or departmental duties, it may take up to 4 years.
