- OsloMet does not have fixed PhD intakes. Positions are announced individually on the OsloMet job portal when funding is available—usually once or twice per year. Candidates must apply for specific advertised positions.
- Admission is highly competitive and depends on academic merit, quality of the research proposal, relevance to the department’s research profile, and availability of supervision. Only a limited number of positions are available each year.
- Yes. PhD candidates at OsloMet are employed as research fellows and receive a monthly salary, social benefits, and access to research resources. Positions are fully funded for three or four years, depending on teaching or administrative duties.
- A strong academic record is required, usually equivalent to a B grade (or higher) on the Norwegian grading scale. The applicant’s master’s thesis must demonstrate research competence.
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree (120 ECTS) in journalism, media studies, communication studies, or a closely related field within the social sciences or humanities. The combined length of education should equal five years of higher education (300 ECTS credits).
- The program focuses on advanced research into journalism, media, and communication within social, cultural, and political contexts. It trains candidates to conduct independent, theory-driven, and methodologically sound research on media systems, news production, digital communication, audience behavior, and media innovation.
