FAQs

  • Students benefit from access to Princeton University Library and its rare books and special collections, departmental seminars and colloquia, research centres such as the Council of the Humanities, professional development workshops, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Students complete coursework in the first two years, followed by general examinations, a dissertation prospectus, and the dissertation. The degree is awarded upon submission of the dissertation (normally 80,000–100,000 words) and a successful oral defense.
  • Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a closely related discipline. A Master’s degree is not required but may strengthen an application. Required application materials include a statement of academic purpose, a substantial writing sample (20–25 pages), transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
  • The programme offers supervision in medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian literature, modernism, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American literature, postcolonial and world literatures, poetry and poetics, drama and performance studies, narrative theory, gender and sexuality studies, environmental humanities, critical and cultural theory, and interdisciplinary approaches that connect literature with history, politics, religion, philosophy, and the arts.
  • The PhD is normally completed in 5–6 years of full-time study.
