FAQs
- Yes, various studentships are available, including those funded by Queen Mary, Doctoral Training Programmes (LISS, LAHP), and other sources. Funding applications require you to have applied to the PhD programme and often to have secured a supervisor before the funding deadline
- You must submit an online application with a research proposal relevant to an area of law where the School has academic expertise. You should contact a potential supervisor before applying, as naming a supervisor strengthens your application, especially for funding. The application requires transcripts, references, and a research proposal
- The School of Law can supervise PhD projects in most fields of law, including but not limited to: Aviation and Shipping Law Banking and Finance Law Competition Law and Policy Criminal Justice Law Energy and Natural Resources Law Human Rights Law Intellectual Property Law International Commercial Law Legal Theory and Humanities Public International Law
- Full-time study is typically three to four years, while part-time study is six to seven years
- Applicants usually have an LLM with distinction or equivalent, but strong performance in an LLM dissertation, an outstanding undergraduate degree, or significant professional legal experience (such as five years as a lawyer, magistrate, or judge) may compensate for a lower qualification
- Typically, you need a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1) or equivalent. Some applicants may require a first class honours and/or a master’s degree, especially for competitive funding. Equivalent international qualifications and relevant professional experience may also be considered. If English is not your first language, you must meet the programme’s English language requirements, which can be provided after application if needed.
