The UK's growing electricity needs (from electric vehicles, data farms, etc.) and commitment to decarbonisation are driving a shift to the deployment of large offshore floating wind farms. A major challenge is that these turbines are not decoupled: the turbulent downstream wind generated by each turbine — the notorious wake effects — can have a negative impact on other turbines. Wake effects can reduce the turbines’ productivity and generate undesirable vibrations that accelerate their wear and tear and lead to failures. In this project we will devise advanced control algorithms to address these challenges.
