Applications are invited from Northern Ireland, Great Britain and Republic of Ireland candidates only. International candidates should NOT apply for this PhD opportunity. There exists a disparate range of evidence that requires reassessment to challenge the dominant narrative of Ireland’s urban past. The aim of this project is to use cross-disciplinary approaches to integrate digitally spatial, historical and material evidence to remap the early origins and evolution of urbanism on the island of Ireland. Spanning the period c.800-1500CE, this longue durée reassessment will involve a synthesis of medieval artefactual, visual and textual sources for Ireland, combining Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and AI technologies. This is a unique and innovative project combining spatial and geographic skills and techniques with qualitative and interpretative methods of analysis, the ambition of which is to offer a new understanding of the complexities of urbanism and urban evolution in Ireland.
