- Graduates pursue academic careers in English and related humanities fields, as well as positions in publishing, cultural institutions, media, libraries and archives, non-profits, and digital/public humanities.
- Students complete coursework and fulfill language requirements, then take qualifying exams and submit a dissertation prospectus. The programme culminates in the completion and oral defense of the dissertation.
- Students have access to Fondren Library and Special Collections, interdisciplinary humanities centers, the Humanities Research Center, digital scholarship resources, departmental colloquia, professional development workshops, and opportunities to present research at conferences.
- All admitted PhD students receive full funding for 6 years. This includes tuition remission, a competitive annual stipend, health insurance, and support for research and conference travel. Funding is provided through fellowships and teaching assistantships.
- Research areas include American literature from colonial to contemporary, British literature from medieval to modern, African American literature, postcolonial and global Anglophone literatures, gender and sexuality studies, critical race theory, ecocriticism, speculative fiction, poetry and poetics, literary and cultural theory, visual and media studies, science and literature, medical humanities, and digital humanities.
