- All admitted PhD students receive full financial support for up to 6 years, which includes tuition remission, a living stipend, health insurance, and research/travel funding. Support is provided through fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
- Students complete coursework in the first two years, followed by field and language examinations, a dissertation proposal, and the dissertation itself. The degree is awarded after submission of a doctoral dissertation (normally 80,000–100,000 words) and a successful defense.
- Areas of supervision include medieval literature, Renaissance and Shakespeare studies, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American literature, modernism, contemporary world literatures, postcolonial studies, literary and critical theory, poetics, drama and performance studies, digital humanities, visual culture, gender and sexuality studies, and interdisciplinary studies with history, philosophy, religion, and political thought.
