This 3.5-year PhD studentship at The University of Manchester, based in Manchester, focuses on the development of high strength, corrosion-resistant aluminium alloys designed to perform better than existing alloys and to be formulated from recycled aluminium to reduce embedded carbon/nature to Net Zero. The project aims to understand interactions between alloy chemistry, processing, microstructure (in particular second phase particles and recrystallization) and performance. Characterisation methods include advanced high resolution electron microscopy, X-ray and electron-based nanotomography, correlative accelerated laboratory testing and electrochemical measurements. The studentship includes access to state-of-the-art facilities, interdisciplinary skills development, and collaboration with industrial partners. The start date is October 2026. Stipend set at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26) and tuition fees will be paid./n
