Overview

Department: Electrical and Electronic Engineering/nTitle: Stability and Control Interaction of Multi-terminal HVDC Systems/nThis 3.5-year PhD studentship will consider multi-terminal scheme configurations with various combinations of DC voltage controlling stations and active power controlling stations, develop models in Matlab/SIMULINK of bipole converters with neutral current regulation, and investigate interactions when all converter stations operate with AC grid-forming functionality. The research will investigate methodologies to determine stability criteria and local and/or global tuning methodologies to ensure power electronic devices interoperability, the DC system stability and ancillary services to support the AC system. The successful candidate will interact with GE Vernova’s engineering staff and may work part of the time in GE Vernova’s main HVDC design office in Stafford, UK. Stipend, tuition, travel and consumables funding are provided. Start date is July 2026.
