- The PhD typically lasts 3 or 4 years full-time (or part-time equivalent), depending on entry point and prior qualifications. The programme involves substantial original research, usually including 12–18 months of ethnographic fieldwork, culminating in a thesis of up to 80,000 words. Students take research training courses in the first year and must pass a research proposal and oral viva before proceeding to fieldwork.
- IELTS: Minimum 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in writing and 6.5 in other sections. TOEFL (iBT): Minimum 100 overall, 25 in all sections. Pearson Test of English: Minimum 76 overall, 76 in writing, 70 in other sections. Alternatively, a recent degree from a majority English-speaking country may suffice.
- Applicants should have a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree in Social Anthropology or a related subject with at least a 2:1 (UK 60%) or overseas equivalent, and/or a Master’s degree in Social Anthropology or a relevant subject with a minimum of 65% in both the dissertation and overall grade, with no mark below 55%. Those with only an undergraduate degree are generally considered for the 1+3 programme (integrated MA in Anthropological Research plus PhD), while those with a Master’s degree are eligible for the +3 (PhD only) programme. For the Social Anthropology with Visual Media pathway, practical competence in visual media is desirable but not essential.
