- Students benefit from the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, the Scholars’ Lab for digital humanities, the Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures, interdisciplinary seminars, departmental colloquia, and opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
- All admitted PhD students are fully funded for up to 6 years. Funding packages include full tuition coverage, health insurance, and a living stipend. Support is provided through fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
- Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related discipline. Application materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
- Research areas include medieval and early modern literature, Renaissance and Shakespeare studies, eighteenth-century British literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial through contemporary, African American literature, Native American and Indigenous literatures, postcolonial and global Anglophone studies, modernism, contemporary literature, poetry and poetics, performance studies, rhetoric and composition, book history and textual studies, digital humanities, critical theory, and gender and sexuality studies.
- The PhD is designed to be completed in 6 years of full-time study.
