Overview
The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (EMG) at Umeå University invites applicants for a PhD position on carbon cycling in Arctic headwaters. The start date is flexible but ideally sometime between June and November 2026. Deadline for applications is 30 March 2026./nThis project aims to investigate climate impacts on the lateral export of carbon from and the subsequent turnover and fate of this carbon from streams and lakes. The project includes comparative studies across various vegetation, permafrost and climate conditions in the Arctic, experimental tests of climate driven changes in carbon export and turnover and release of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) from headwaters, and use of machine learning and process-based models for large scale assessments and projections. Field studies will be mainly carried out in northern Boreal-Arctic Sweden, complemented by studies in other Arctic regions. The project includes collaborations and use of field and laboratory infrastructure at the Climate Impacts Research Centre (CIRC) and Abisko Scientific Research Station.
