Overview
PhD Studentship based at the MaREI Centre within the UCC Sustainability Institute focused on “The electrification of remote island ferries and its impact on rural energy systems.” The project (AI-Ferry) will examine the potential for electrification of remote island ferries, assess battery swapping, opportunistic charging and hybrid options, and explore strategies to reduce impacts on local distribution networks including island microgrids powered by renewables. The successful candidate will be based at the School of Engineering and Architecture, University College Cork, with access to HPC facilities, industry-standard power systems software, real-time simulation tools, and a 400 V three-phase laboratory microgrid. The position is fully-funded with a tax-free stipend and tuition fees covered at the EU rate. Location: University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.
