Overview

PhD Studentship: Redefinition of SI Second Using Optical Clocks./nLocation: Birmingham/nOptical clocks are most precise instruments ever built by human beings. They are excellent tools to study fundamental physics. Presently, SI second is defined using Cs hyperfine transition which falls in the microwave domain (~9.2GHz). However optical clocks have surpassed microwave clocks by at least two orders of magnitude in their performance. There is a great drive to re-define the SI second to an optical clock transition. This requires comparing ensembles of clocks. We have formed a network of optical clocks across UK and Europe. Additionally, we are developing transportable optical clocks in our labs. Transportable optical clocks are going to play crucial role in the redefinition of SI second. If you interested in optical clocks and their associated applications including the re-definition of SI second, it is the right project for you and you will join a strong team of PostDocs and PhDs.
