Overview
This fully funded 3.5-year PhD position aims to create new molecular tools that establish redox-sensitive binding interactions between small molecules and proteins for applications in biotechnology and programmable biomaterial synthesis./nThe project is linked to a European Research Council Starting Grant awarded to Dr. Oliver Maguire and is based in the School of Chemistry’s new Molecular Sciences Building at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham./nThe PhD involves preparing novel redox-sensitive small molecules by organic synthesis, quantifying their binding interactions with proteins, establishing electrochemical control of their binding to proteins, and applying these tools to biotechnology applications such as assembly of bio-based patterned hydrogels and isolation and purification of proteins.
