FAQs
- A research proposal outlining your research questions, literature review, and methodology is required. You should also submit academic transcripts, references, and evidence of English language proficiency if applicable.
- Students benefit from a supervisory team, access to departmental research resources (like the Church Missionary Society archive and African Collection), and participation in an active research community. There are opportunities to present research at seminars, conferences, and contribute to departmental events
- The Department of African Studies and Anthropology (DASA) offers expertise in areas such as migration, religion, economic inequality, youth, urban studies, popular culture, kinship, gender, and sexuality. Applicants are encouraged to identify and contact a potential supervisor before applying
- Yes, the programme offers flexibility: you can study full-time, part-time, or by distance learning. Distance learning students are required to visit campus at least once in the first year
- The PhD in Social Anthropology is normally three years full-time or six years part-time. There is an additional "thesis awaited" year for final revisions if needed. The first year includes a literature review and research training, followed by further research and thesis writing. Regular feedback and supervision are provided throughout.
- Applicants typically need a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area. A good (normally 2:1 or above) Honours degree or equivalent is also expected. Relevant academic and professional experience may be considered as part of the entrance requirements
