  • All admitted PhD students receive full financial support for at least 6 years, including tuition, fees, a living stipend, health insurance, and summer support. Funding comes from university fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships.
  • Research areas include medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century British literature, Romanticism, Victorian studies, American literature from colonial to contemporary, African American and African diasporic literature, postcolonial and global literatures, modernism, contemporary fiction and poetry, drama and performance studies, poetry and poetics, critical theory, book history, gender and sexuality studies, environmental humanities, digital humanities, and interdisciplinary studies across philosophy, history, politics, religion, and the arts.
  • Applicants must hold a strong undergraduate degree in English or a related discipline; many successful applicants also hold a Master’s degree. Required materials include a statement of purpose, a writing sample (15–20 pages), academic transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. GRE scores are not required.
