- Students are typically assigned a faculty advisor during the admissions process. This advisor supervises research and guides course selection. Students may request a change of advisor with departmental approval.
- Applicants generally need a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Minimum English proficiency scores are TOEFL 85, IELTS 7, or PTE 65. GRE requirements have been waived until further notice. Admission is competitive and based on academic record, research experience, and fit with faculty interests.
- Department Qualifying Exam (DQE) before the end of the 2nd year Advance to Candidacy Senate Exam prior to the end of the 4th year Dissertation defense, usually by the end of the 5th year Students must also complete three 1-unit MAE 205 Graduate Seminars before advancing to candidacy.
- Students must complete 36 units of coursework (9 four-unit courses) before the Departmental Qualifying Exam (DQE). At least 6 of these must be 200-level MAE courses, and 3 can be 200-level or upper-division undergraduate STEM courses. The course plan must be approved by the faculty advisor and DQE committee.
- PhD students can specialize in areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Applied Ocean Science, Engineering Physics, Multi-Scale Biology, and others within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department.
- The PhD is a research-oriented degree designed to prepare students for careers in research and teaching. It emphasizes original research, mastery of a specialization, and the ability to make significant contributions to the field of mechanical engineering.
