- Most students complete the PhD in approximately 5–6 years. Advancement to candidacy typically occurs by the middle of the fourth year. The university does not permit students to remain beyond eight years
- The program is research-intensive. Students work closely with faculty advisors in an apprenticeship model, conducting original research from the first year. Coursework includes seminars, proseminars, and statistics. Students also gain teaching experience as teaching assistants (TAs)
- The program provides advanced training in research across core subfields of experimental psychology, including behavioral neuroscience, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, sensation and perception, and social psychology. There is also a joint doctoral program in Clinical Psychology with San Diego State University (SDSU)
- UCSD offers a PhD in Psychology. There is no terminal master’s or PsyD program; students are admitted directly to the PhD track.
