- Supervision is available across a wide range of areas including medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare and Renaissance studies, Romantic and Victorian literature, modernism, twentieth- and twenty-first-century writing, American literature, postcolonial and world literatures, comparative literature, translation studies, gender and sexuality studies, critical and cultural theory, creative-critical writing, and environmental and medical humanities.
- Students benefit from access to the UEA Library and its extensive special collections, interdisciplinary research training provided by the Doctoral College, departmental seminars, research centres such as the Centre for Creative and Literary Arts, and opportunities to present research at national and international conferences.
- Funding is available through the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) via the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) Doctoral Training Partnership, UEA Faculty studentships, University scholarships, and external funding bodies.
- Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree in English Literature or a related discipline. A strong academic track record and a clear, well-developed research proposal are essential. Exceptionally, applicants with outstanding undergraduate performance may be admitted to MPhil with the possibility of progressing to PhD.
- The PhD normally takes 3–4 years full-time or 5–7 years part-time. The MPhil usually takes 1–2 years full-time or 2–4 years part-time.
