FAQs

  • While the programme is flexible and allows you to select many subjects, there are limits on how many credits you can take from certain fields in a given semester. Also, course availability depends on demand; some courses may not run every year.
  • You apply via the university’s online application system. You need to submit academic transcripts, proof of degree, references, possibly evidence of English language proficiency, and your choices of courses. After application, there is a decision process which may take several weeks. Offers can be conditional or unconditional; a deposit is required for many on-campus programmes.
  • Yes. There is an LLM by Research option, which allows students to undertake independent research under specialist supervision, working toward a dissertation (up to around 30,000 words) in a chosen field. This can be done full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months).
  • Yes. You can choose courses across many legal fields (commercial law, public law, criminal law, international law, etc.). Edinburgh also offers specialised LLM programmes (for example in European Law, Human Rights, Intellectual Property) that allow you to focus more deeply in certain areas.
  • The programme can be taken full-time over one year, or part-time over two years, subject to visa restrictions.
