  • Prospective students are encouraged to contact a potential supervisor in their area of interest before applying. Applications are submitted online, including a research proposal, academic transcripts, proof of English proficiency (if applicable), and references. It is advisable to apply well before deadlines, as places are competitive and limited.
  • The current Postgraduate Convener for English Literature is Dr. Sophie Vlacos ([email protected]). For subject-specific queries, contact the Head of English Literature, Dr. Stephen Burn ([email protected]).
  • Normally, applicants should have at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree (2:1) or equivalent. Most successful applicants will also have completed, or be undertaking, a relevant Masters qualification. For international students, a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 with no sub-test below 7.0, or equivalent TOEFL (100) scores, is required.
  • The PhD is typically 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time. The thesis should be between 70,000 and 100,000 words, including references, bibliography, and appendices (excluding documentary appendices). The degree is awarded for an original thesis that makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the field, and the work should normally contain material worthy of publication.
  • Postgraduate applicants should receive a response within 1 month, however, at busy times of the year this can increase to 2 months. Adam Smith Business School and School of Computing Science: Masters applicants will receive a response to their offer by the date stated on the webpage for the programme they have applied to. Undergraduate/Bachelors applicants should expect to wait 2-4 months for a response to their application.
  • You must submit English Language test results as part of your application unless you are from a majority English speaking country as defined by UK Visa and Immigration OR you have a degree from majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI including Canada if taught in English) students must have studied for a minimum of 2 years at Undergraduate level, or 9 months at Master's level, and must have completed their degree in that majority-English speaking country within the last 6 years. Undergraduate 2+2 degrees from majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI including Canada if taught in English) students must have completed their final two years study in that majority-English speaking country within the last 6 years.
  • We accept the Academic or the Academic UKVI IELTS. We do not accept the General IELTS or IELTS Indicator.
