  • Each student forms a guidance and dissertation committee of at least five members: The chair and at least two others must be NRESS faculty Members must represent more than one academic department At least one member should be from outside UNH (with approval).
  • Graduates are prepared for roles as university faculty, principal investigators in government agencies, research scientists in NGOs, or policy advisors for governmental and non-governmental organizations.
  • Students can pursue research in ecosystem science, geochemical systems, hydrology, marine science, forestry, environmental education, social science, environmental policy and ethics, and more. The program encourages multidisciplinary work and collaboration with centers like the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space.
  • Most students enter with a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in fields such as biology, ecology, environmental science, geology, hydrology, or microbiology.
  • The program is highly interdisciplinary, addressing complex environmental challenges by integrating earth and life sciences, social sciences, and environmental policy. Areas of study include geology, hydrology, climate science, geochemical systems, ecosystem science, biogeochemical cycling, atmospheric science, environmental policy, and more.
