- The thesis may be written as a monograph or as a collection of peer-reviewed scientific articles with a summary (“kappe”). The work concludes with a trial lecture and public defence (disputation).
- Candidates must complete at least 30 ECTS of coursework, including mandatory training in research ethics, philosophy of science, and research methodology. Additional courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, or qualitative methods are common for public health projects.
- Applicants need both an approved research project and secured funding. They may apply for advertised PhD fellowships at UiO or apply with external funding. The application must include a project proposal, supervision plan, and documentation of financing.
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in health sciences, medicine, public health, or a related field, with strong academic performance (generally equivalent to grade B or better in the Norwegian grading scale).
- Research spans epidemiology, global health, health promotion, health policy and systems, environmental and occupational health, nutrition, biostatistics, digital health, and health services research.
- The programme normally takes 3 years of full-time study, or 4 years if combined with 25% compulsory duties such as teaching, clinical, or administrative work.
